The death has occurred on Friday, May 3, 2024, of Josephine 'Josie' Walshe, née Keogh, Curraghtarsna, Fethard, peacefully at home. Predeceased by her husband Sean, her daughters Dia, Angela and Simone. Deeply regretted by her son John, daughter Rose, grandson Lee, sister Esther, nephews, nieces, relatives neighbours and friends. Darkness into Light at Fethard Town Park on May 11
All systems go here at Fethard Town Park on Saturday, May 11, when 'Darkness Into Light', in aid of Pieta House, Self Harm or Suicide Crisis Centre. Ending suicide and beginning hope takes place there, a truly magnificent organisation where we would urge you all to come and attend this event as we head for our 3rd year. Spread the word. Since 2006, Pieta has seen and helped over 70,000 people in suicidal distress or engaging in self-harm.

Parish Church Lotto Draw Results

Poetry Day Ireland - open to interpretation

Poetry Day Ireland was celebrated in the Fethard Horse Country Experience on Thursday, April 25, 2024. The theme for this year was Good Sports which, as always, was open to interpretation or could, indeed, be abandoned altogether in favour of a different topic.
Welcoming everyone to what has now become an annual celebration of the spoken word, Mary Hanrahan began by paying tribute to the late Michael Coady.
“Michael Coady was a wonderful poet, a member of Aosdána, a musician, and an historian. Above all, he was a proud Tipperary man whose work was embedded in his beloved Carrick-on- Suir. He also had lots of connections to Fethard. He was a great friend to the Fethard Historical Society and a long time supporter of the annual Book Fair. He also played a large part in introducing us to the connection between Tipperary and Newfoundland. Michael won the Tipperariana Book of the Year Award for his book One Another, a compilation of poetry, prose and illustrations. As usual, local ceramicist Dóirín Saurus created a unique piece, an impressive candle holder inscribed with a verse from the title poem. Michael himself told us it became a much-cherished item in his home.”
Mary then opened the poetry session by reading ‘One Another’, Michael Coady’s poem celebrating the:
. . . unexpected joy,
. . . at how you’re blessed
. . . amongst those men and women,
. . . one but individual…
Sport was celebrated in Margaret Galvin’s ‘The Boxer’s Send Off’; Fr. Brian Power’s ‘Pitch and Putt’, and S. Hammond’s ‘Sports Day’. Martha Sheehan brought the clash of the ash to life with an invigorating rendition of ‘The Match down the Park’, by Theo Dorgan.

First timer, Tom Hayden, made his debut with a nostalgic poem about dancing in the Fethard Ballroom - a different kind of sport when late night curfews still held sway. Norberta O’Gorman injected humour with a selection of Spike Milligan’s poems and Michael Mallon waxed philosophical quoting Carl Sandburg’s ‘Is Wisdom a Lot of Language?’. Thomas Power recited his own composition ‘The Burial of Billy Murphy’, an interesting narrative piece with an unexpected outcome.
Also unexpected was the introduction of ChatGPT as Ann Walsh explained how she ‘wrote’ a poem simply by choosing random words and then handing the creative process over to AI. She proceeded to demonstrate how it works and all agreed that the results were impressive. However, people came to the conclusion that poetry is more than simply the arrangement of words, it also requires soul. The human poet will prevail . . . hopefully!

Gerry Whyte redressed the balance with a wonderful rendition of Lewis Carroll’s whimsically imaginative ‘The Jabberwocky’. Local poet Terry Cunningham then regaled the company with his humorous ‘I Want My Fifteen Minutes’, referencing the famous Andy Warhol quote.
Mary Hanrahan thanked everyone for coming along pointing out, “It’s not easy to read in public and it’s even more daunting when one is reading one’s own work. It’s also important to have an audience, so I’d like to say a special thank you to everyone who came along to listen and to offer encouragement. Thanks also to Dale and Olga at the Fethard Horse Country Experience for facilitating us here today. I’d like to conclude the event by once again paying tribute to our friend Michael Coady, a wonderful poet and a lovely man.”
Mary finished by reading her own poem ‘The Carrick Knot’, which she dedicated to the memory of Michael Coady.
Died Recently
 The death has occurred on Monday, April 29, 2024, of Tommy Sayers, Crampscastle, Fethard, at Clonmel University Hospital. Deeply regretted by his loving wife Mary, his daughters Tess and Susan, son Tommy, grandsons Dylan and Daragh, brothers Tony and Billy, sister Judy, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.
Tommy's Funeral Mass will take place in the Augustinian Abbey Church, Fethard, on Thursday May 2, at 11am followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. The Mass can be watched online at www.fethardabbey.com

GAA Sports Development Lotto Results
Fethard GAA Sports Lotto draw results for Tuesday, April 30, 2024, are as follows: the numbers drawn were: 1, 3, 18, and 22. We had no Jackpot winner and one Match 3 winner who received €150: Robert Noonan. One lucky dip winner received €100: Lesley Prendergast.

I
am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible support and assistance you provided in helping to evacuate Rahma and her family from Gaza. Your kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication made it possible for us to fulfill our promise to Rahma, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
On Sunday, Rahma and her family safely arrived in Egypt, where they will begin a new life. The relief and happiness I feel knowing that Rahma's daughters now have a chance to create a brighter future is overwhelming. Though we celebrate this remarkable achievement, our hearts remain heavy for those still enduring hardship in Gaza. It is crucial that we continue to shine a light on the situation and advocate for a free Palestine.
As Irish people, we understand the enduring struggle against occupation, as it is ingrained in our own history. It is our moral duty to ensure that their voices are heard and their suffering is acknowledged until justice prevails. Together, we can make a difference and strive towards a better future for all.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your invaluable support and solidarity. Your kindness has truly made a difference in the lives of Rahma and her family, and I am forever grateful for your compassion and generosity.

Beloved husband of Phyllis (Wall). Loving father of Mary (Boland), Liz (Matthews), Carmel (Asbury), Vincent and Eva. Adoring grandfather of Jack, Giles, Will, Darcy and Zoe. Sadly missed by his brother John, sisters Mary and Frances, sister-in-law Margaret, brother-in-law Pascal, sons-in-law Eugene, Peter and Richard, nephews, cousins, extended family, neighbours and wide circle of friends. Predeceased by his parents James and Nell and his Grandson Jonty. May he rest in peace.

Social Dancing at Fethard Ballroom

Annual Athletics Evening in Fethard GAA Park on Saturday May 4 at 2pm
Fethard & Killusty Community Games in conjunction with Fethard Athletic Club, will hold their annual athletics evening in Fethard GAA Park on Saturday May 4, commencing at 2pm with the field events:
- Boys U12 Long Puck
- Girls U14 Long Puck
followed by the Boys & Girls Track Events:
- U8-Over 6, 60m and 80 meters
- U10 100m, U10 200m
- U12 100m, U12 600m
- U14 100m, U14 800m
- U16 100m, U16 1500m.
Entry Fee €3 per event. Registration from 1.30pm. Competitors must live in the Parish and must be under the age specified on July 31, 2024. Consent forms must be signed by parents. We wish to thank Fethard Athletic Club for their assistance with this event. Medals for 1st, 2nd & 3rd, and first two in each event will qualify for the County Finals which will be held in Clonmel Sports Hub on Monday, June 3, 2024.
The regional finals will also take place in Clonmel Sports Hub on August 10, 2024. National Finals in SETU Carlow will take place on August 24 and 25, 2024.
'Service For Life', at Augustinian Abbey, Sun. May 12
On Sunday, May 12, a 'Service for Life' will be celebrated in Fethard Augustinian Abbey. It will coincide with 'Darkness into Light' weekend the national event which is held in solidarity with all who have been touched by the tragedy of suicide. The Abbey service will take place at 12 noon and all are welcome.
Presentation Convent appoint design team to prepare Planning Application
Presentation Convent and grounds prepared for development planning permission by design consultants, Ronan O’Connor MRIAI, Director and the OC+C Architects team.
Fethard and District Day Care Centre CLG have appointed OC+C architects Dublin as their Design team for the development of the Presentation Convent Fethard.
This appointment followed the statutory E-Tender process. We were assisted in this process by Mr Rónán Clerkin and associates from the Department of Social Housing.
The design team expect to lodge a planning application by mid-September 2024.
Part of this process will include a public consultation element, where their concept for the development will be fully explained. They will include the submissions already received from the public including Fethard Historical Society.
The development consists of independent living units for the elderly and wheelchair users, incorporating an expanded Day Care service including a Community Laundry. The Convent Church will become a ‘continental style’ town hall, for special community occasions, including conferences etc.
This is a very exciting development for the town centre of Fethard and will maintain this beautiful historic building and town centre site in community ownership and service.

Community Playgroup enrolling for September
Fethard Community Playgroup are now taking names for September 2024. We have two sessions per day. Children who are three years old before December 31, 2024, are eligible for the free three hours a day ECCE Scheme. Parents may apply under NCS scheme if they wish their children to stay for an extra two hours per day. All paperwork must be complete before commencing. Spaces are limited for this.
Morning session starts at 9am and finishes at 12 noon, Monday to Friday. The afternoon session starts at 12.30pm and finishes at 3.30pm, Monday to Friday. The National Childcare Scheme is for children who are not eligible for the ECCE Scheme that are not three years old before December 31, 2024.

Amy is sleeping out on Thursday night, outside the US Consulate in Krakow, where she lives, and has organised a fundraiser where 100 percent of the money raised will go directly to Rahma, to get her and her two young daughters evacuated as soon as possible. On Thursday, April 4th, I am asking YOU to sleep out, in solidarity with the people of Gaza! I will be putting myself outside the US Consulate in Krakow, Poland - to show that we do NOT agree with their complicity in genocide and we demand a permanent ceasefire! Find your people, and making this movement happen in your town too! Please support us by sleeping out on Thursday April 4th! We will be camping outside the US Consulate.
